The Earl of Salisbury, an elderly English nobleman, agrees with the Duke of Gloucester’s criticism of the treaty that the Duke of Suffolk negotiated between England and France. Anticipating that Suffolk, Cardinal Beaufort, and other ambitious, arrogant nobles will conspire against Gloucester, Salisbury asks his own son, the Earl of Warwick, as well as the Duke of York to help him protect Gloucester. Soon enough, however, cunning York convinces Salisbury and Warwick that York himself is the rightful king of England, not King Henry VI. After Salisbury and Warwick have sworn loyalty to York, their major focus is on helping him seize the throne. They participate in the battle between York’s forces and Henry’s toward the end of the play. In the final scene, they are preparing with York to chase down and capture the defeated, fleeing Henry.
