Ammaji Character Analysis

Ammaji is Mr. Chawla’s elderly mother, which makes her Kulfi’s mother-in-law and the grandmother of Sampath and Pinky. Kind and well-meaning, Ammaji is the most active maternal figure in the Chawla household, as Kulfi is often preoccupied with strange fantasies and cravings. It’s often Ammaji's responsibility to help take care of Sampath, though she doesn’t quite understand him in the same way that Kulfi does. After Sampath begins living in a tree and accidentally becomes famous as a holy man, Ammaji seems content to help Sampath and affectionately boast about him to visitors. She cares deeply about her family and she’s constantly recommending them remedies and ways to stay healthy. She maintains a positive outlook throughout the novel, trying to encourage Sampath and support his strange new way of life.
