Summary
Analysis
As Hongwei’s trafficking business collapsed, he moved Yeonmi and her mother to an apartment in Shenyang—the region’s “crime capital,” but also where he hoped to break into real estate. There, he developed a gambling addiction and quickly burned through his remaining money. Eventually, Keum Sook begged Yeonmi to sell her, believing it was the only way forward. Hongwei agreed and sold her to a kind farming family for just under $3,000—a sum he gambled away almost immediately. Realizing she needed to earn her own income, Yeonmi set out to obtain a Chinese ID so she could pass as an ethnic-Korean Chinese citizen, as many North Korean refugees had done before her.
Hongwei’s financial collapse drags Yeonmi and her mother into yet another instability they never chose. His gambling addiction exposes him as someone who may appear successful from the outside, but who has no real ability to run a legitimate business or secure stable work. Keum Sook asking to be sold again—horrific as it is—reflects her sense of maternal duty. What seems unthinkable becomes, for her, the only way to protect Yeonmi. But Hongwei gambling away her payment that same day shows how little their lives matter within his worldview. He may technically hold the power, but he has almost no grasp of true responsibility, an imbalance that underscores the gendered dynamics structuring their entire relationship. Yeonmi’s decision to pursue a Chinese ID is important because she stops depending on the men who control her and begins to build a path of her own, joining other refugees who survive through reinvention.

Through Hongwei’s gangster friend Li, Yeonmi met a gangster couple who said they could help her get an ID. The woman took her to an upscale club and introduced her to a wealthy man named Huang, who agreed to assist. He drove Yeonmi to a nearby park, asked questions about her background, and she told him she was 18. He then brought her to his luxury 27th-floor apartment, where he said she should wait while her ID was arranged. He claimed to be an antiques dealer, though Yeonmi later learned he hadn’t even finished elementary school. The next day, he introduced her to the seven women who lived with him and told her he wanted her to bear him a son.
The ID scheme pulls Yeonmi into a new layer of the criminal underworld—spaces where vulnerability is exploited under the pretense of opportunity. Huang’s wealth and apparent sophistication mask the same predatory impulses present in the trafficking world she already knows. The seven women living with him make clear that he is constructing a private world insulated from accountability, one where he chooses women to fulfill his fantasies and treats pregnancy as a form of possession. This environment shows how coercion can wear the costume of luxury, but the underlying dynamic ultimately remains the same.

Yeonmi called her mother to say she had been kidnapped, but Huang grabbed her phone and told Keum Sook that Yeonmi would be safe and would send money. He then tried to force himself on Yeonmi, but she fought him off. She found herself missing Hongwei, who, despite all his demons, “at least […] had a human heart.” She ultimately remained in Huang’s possession for about a week. Keum Sook contacted Hongwei and told him where Yeonmi was, and he sent Li to retrieve her, but Huang intimidated Yeonmi into staying. Hongwei later called Huang, threatening to “go to war” if she wasn’t returned. Yeonmi then convinced Huang that she was loyal only to him—not to Hongwei—which allowed her to briefly leave under the pretense of visiting her mother.

Alone on the train, Yeonmi called Hongwei, who immediately found her and took her to the farm where Keum Sook lived to keep her hidden from Huang. Both Yeonmi and Hongwei were surprised by the lengths he went to in order to reclaim her, and Yeonmi believes he truly did love her in his own damaged way. Through their acquaintance, Myung Ok, Yeonmi and her mother learned about a work opportunity in Shenyang, and Hongwei agreed to let Yeonmi go. He believed Jin Sik’s ghost was haunting him for how he had treated her. He apologized for his cruelty, and while Yeonmi never stopped resenting him entirely, she remained grateful for the ways he had helped her family. She returned the gold jewelry he had bought her, seeing it as symbolically buying back her freedom.
