Explanation and Analysis:
In the Time of the Butterflies is a rousing condemnation of oppressive dictatorial regimes, most specifically Rafael Trujillo's fascist rule over the Dominican Republic both as dictator and through puppet presidents. The story's tone is then one of independence and resilience, celebrating the fight for freedom against fascism (while illustrating the sacrifices required to take part in that fight). Indeed, the portrayal of what it costs Minerva, Mate, and Patria to fight for what is right, including the ultimate sacrifice of their lives, is a dark cloud that hangs over the novel and permeates its tone.
