Explanation and Analysis:

Indian Horse is fiction that reckons with the past. Told from Saul’s perspective, the novel has the flavor of a memoir or autobiography as he recounts his upbringing in Canada’s residential school system and unexpected connection to hockey. Indian loses his brother, then grandmother. He gets kidnapped into St. Jerome’s and abused by Father Leboutilier. But he also draws upon the stories of his ancestors—Solomon, Shabogeesick, Naomi—for strength and support. In a novel already defined by memory, the past weaves itself throughout the story.
