Explanation and Analysis:
The novel is set mainly in near-future Boston, with some important scenes in Tuscon, Arizona. Much of the plot also revolves around the (fictional) Great Concavity/Convexity, a huge swathe of land taking up much of the northeast. This chunk of land has been cleared of inhabitants and appended to Canada as part of a merger between the United States, Canada, and Mexico. It is essentially a huge toxic waste dump. The Great Concavity/Convexity has become central to the plan of Québecois separatists, who want to destroy the merger but keep the dump along Québec's border so that Canada will finally allow them to secede and take all the trash with them.
