Explanation and Analysis—Indirect Sight:
Lahiri has all of the main characters in “Interpreter of Maladies” see each other in limited and indirect ways, forming a motif. Mr. Das, for example, views his family (and the world at large) through his camera lens, while his wife views them through dark sunglasses. Their children—Ronny, Bobby, and Tina—wear “caps with translucent visors,” implying that they are viewing their surroundings through the warped plastic of their hats.
