Tone
Explanation and Analysis:
The tone of “Interpreter of Maladies” shifts from detached to desperate to disappointed over the course of the story. The limited third-person narrator stays close to Mr. Kapasi’s perspective throughout the story, making it so that, as Mr. Kapasi’s emotional state shifts, the tone of the story shifts with it. Over the course of the narrative, Mr. Kapasi goes from disinterestedly performing his job as a tour guide (for an Indian American family of four), to desperately longing for his married client Mrs. Das (who shows him attention in return), to ultimately losing his desire for her (after realizing she was only showing him attention because she wanted his professional advice).
