Chapter 3
Explanation and Analysis:

The style of the novel's prose is, for the most part, vivid and highly figurative. Charlie crams his sentences with literary devices, many of them merging into one another. This style allows him to convey to the reader not only an objective sense of what is happening around him, but also how it feels in his body and mind. For example, in Chapter 3, he narrates his thought process as he watches Eliza go into her house with her mother:

I think about Eliza’s manner. So dry and centered. So matter-of-fact amid the panic. I watch her climbing the garden steps to their front door, holding her weeping mother. Someone is there to meet them with an outstretched hand and a look of concern. I shrink behind the branches. And then, swift as a knife, it occurs to me. A rash of sparks coats my skin. My heart almost leaps from my chest, and my brick slides.

Eliza Wishart knows something.
