Explanation and Analysis:
The novel is set primarily on Isla Nublar, a small island off of Costa Rica where John Hammond and Dr. Henry Wu have cloned dinosaurs in an environment they believe is controlled. In real life, Costa Rica is known for its biodiversity. Its volcanic soil, Pacific and Caribbean coastlines, and other aspects of its climate make it the kind of place where many life forms thrive. Hammond and Wu have carefully manipulated the biodiverse environment on Isla Nublar to accommodate prehistoric animals, too. It is hot, humid, and cut through with an artificial waterway to simulate the kind of place dinosaurs might have lived.
