Explanation and Analysis:

The book is set primarily in Alabama in the late 1980s through the early 2010s. Stevenson has spent most of his career running the Equal Justice Initiative, a nonprofit law firm he started in Montgomery with his colleague Eve Ansley. Stevenson is drawn to work in Alabama because the state carries out more death row executions per capita than any other state in the country.
