Legend: Chapter 34 Summary & Analysis

Summary
Analysis
The best way to travel invisibly at night is to leap from roof to roof. So, after midnight, June dresses in black and goes from rooftop to rooftop until she reaches Lake sector, where she’s going to look for Kaede. After a few hours wandering in and out of bars, Kaede sneaks up behind June and throws a dagger past her. Tess is with Kaede; it seems she joined the Patriots. Dropping her own weapons, June says she needs Kaede and the Patriot’s help. Pulling Notes out of her backpack, June begins to tell Kaede everything she knows. The only thing she leaves out is how her parents died and that the Republic purposefully spreads the plague in poor sectors—June is too ashamed.
June knows to seek out Kaede thanks to Day and Thomas (recall that Day learned Kaede is a Patriot from Thomas’s interrogation, and he then passed that information offhandedly on to June). When June can’t bring herself to tell the truth about the plague, it speaks to her privilege. She knows she’s been complicit in poor people’s deaths and trauma, and this isn’t a responsibility she’s willing to face up to yet.

When June is finished, Kaede scoffs: it’s noble that June wants to avenge Metias’s murder and save Day, but the fact that she thinks the Patriots will do this just speaks to June’s innocence and privilege. June tosses her backpack over, which has 200,000 Notes in it and a valuable electro-bomb, which will disable guns in a half-mile radius for two minutes. Kaede insists this is just “pocket change” to the Patriots, but she asks for June’s plan anyway. June shares that she’s going to break John out tomorrow night. Then, on the evening of Day’s execution, the Patriots will need to cause a diversion in the square in front of Batalla Hall so June can sneak Day out the back. The other soldiers helping June escort Day should be Patriots in disguise. Kaede smiles.
