Legend: Chapter 37 Summary & Analysis

Summary
Analysis
On the morning of Day’s execution, soldiers unchain Day from the wall. As the Republic always does with criminals about to be executed, it broadcasts footage from his cell (convicts usually do something exciting). Day, though, just sits and thinks. He hopes June will help John too, and he wonders what happened to push her to put herself in danger to help him. He vows to fight until he’s dead, and then he taunts the soldiers a bit. There’s almost certainly a rowdy crowd outside, some of them protesting in support of him—and lots of them cheering that he’ll be dead soon.
As Day’s execution approaches, he refuses to play along and give the Republic what it expects from prisoners in his situation. He’s far too focused on his family—including his budding chosen family with June. Additionally, he thinks of his wider community when he considers the protestors supporting him outside Batalla Hall.

Finally, June and Commander Jameson enter Day’s cell, and Day is struck by how gorgeous she looks. She asks if he has any final requests, and mouths that he should ask to see John. Day complies, so Commander Jameson sends a soldier to fetch him. The young men are then left alone in Day’s cell for five minutes. Day is overcome with anger and sadness: John shouldn’t suffer like this, as he’s not a criminal like Day. They discuss where Eden might be, and then John tells Day to “[m]ake them work for it” and scare people “until the end.” Soldiers take John back to his cell, and then a minute later, soldiers walk Day out of his. On the TV monitors, Day can see the restless crowd assembled outside. When they reach the back hallway, Thomas tells June she’s under investigation and needs to go with him.
