Life Class: Chapter 7  Summary & Analysis

Summary
Analysis
Paul is haunted by his conversation with Neville, and the next time Teresa is nervous about a noise by her apartment, he refuses to go and check. She accuses him of not believing her, and she tells him that Jack has been leaving her threatening letters. When Paul asks to see the letters, Teresa explains that she burns them. He tells her to keep the next one as evidence for the police, then begins to secretly sketch her as she sews. He uses this to study her face to see if she is lying to him, but he still can’t tell.
Though Paul is more aware of his gender biases than Neville is, considering Paul has worked to accept Teresa’s profession as a nude model in a way Neville has not, Paul is nevertheless susceptible to Neville’s sexist rhetoric. Neville’s description of women and models as liars gets to Paul, and his distrust of Teresa begins to undermine their relationship.

The next week, Teresa and Paul find a death threat from Jack at her apartment, but this only adds to Paul’s suspicions. Nevertheless, Paul tries to convince himself to believe Teresa. He asks to see a photograph of Jack, and Teresa shows him a photo of the couple at their wedding. It is clear in the image that Jack and Teresa once truly loved each other. Paul knows he shouldn’t, but he begins “interrogating” her about her marriage with Jack. She gets angry and tells him to leave, but immediately changes her mind and begs him to stay. The two sleep together, and Paul asks if Jack was a good lover, to which Teresa answers that he was too selfish in bed. Later, Paul sees a notepad on Teresa’s desk and deduces that she must have written the note from Jack herself.
