How is Simon different from the other boys?

Simon is different from the other boys in Lord of the Flies because he is generous, spiritually perceptive, and willing to face fear directly instead of denying it or turning it into violence. While Ralph tries to preserve civilization through rules and rescue plans, Jack embraces hunting and domination, and Piggy trusts reason and order, Simon stands apart as the boy who understands that the real danger on the island is inside the boys themselves.

His kindness separates him early on. When Ralph complains that no one helps build shelters, Simon is the only one working beside him. He also helps the younger boys gather fruit, and after Jack refuses to give Piggy meat, Simon shares with Piggy. These moments make him unusual because he helps without needing praise or reward in return.

Simon is also different in how he responds to the island. The other boys fear the jungle, especially at night, but Simon often goes there alone. He finds a hidden glade and sits quietly, almost meditating. Later, when the boys need someone to tell Piggy they will not return that night, everyone is too frightened to volunteer except Simon. His courage comes from a deeper understanding: he senses that the beast is not a physical monster hiding in the trees but rather a spiritual or instinctual presence inside the boys themselves.

That insight becomes clearest when Simon tells the boys, “What I mean is... Maybe [the beast is] only us...” The others misunderstand or reject him, but Simon is the only one who recognizes the truth that the beast represents the boys’ own savagery. He later climbs the mountain, discovers that the supposed beast is only a dead parachutist, and tries to bring this truth back to the group.

Simon’s difference makes him isolated and vulnerable, however. The boys kill him in a frenzy just as he returns with the truth they most need to hear. The most perceptive among them is destroyed by the fear and savagery everyone else refuses to face.
