What is Castle Rock in Lord of the Flies?

Castle Rock is the rocky fort-like formation at the far end of the island that becomes Jack’s stronghold. The boys first find it while searching for the beast. It is difficult to reach, with access only by a narrow piece of stone high above the water, and Jack immediately sees its military value because it protects a cave and has loose boulders that can be rolled down on enemies.

Castle Rock is a significant landmark because it becomes the physical center of Jack’s break from Ralph’s rule. Ralph is focused on rescue, the signal fire, and the fragile order that the conch represents. Jack, meanwhile, sees Castle Rock as a place for defense and violent control of the other boys. After Jack forms his own tribe, he moves there, posts guards, and rules through fear and punishment.

The most important event at Castle Rock is Piggy’s death. Ralph, Piggy, and Samneric go there to demand the return of Piggy’s stolen glasses, which Jack’s tribe needs to make fire. Piggy carries the conch and tries to appeal to reason and fairness, but Roger rolls a boulder from the fort. The boulder kills Piggy and smashes the conch, destroying both the voice of reason and the symbol of law at once.

Castle Rock therefore represents the island’s shift from an attempted civilization into a violent tribal order. Its height, defenses, and weapons make it the opposite of the beach assemblies: a place where power comes from force rather than shared rules.
