Macbeth

Ross brings Macbeth the news that he has been named the new Thane of Cawdor after the previous thane is executed for treachery.

He arrives after the battle and explains that the former Thane of Cawdor betrayed Scotland by helping the enemy. As a reward for Macbeth’s bravery in defeating the rebels and the Norwegian forces, King Duncan has ordered that Macbeth take over the title.

This moment is crucial because it confirms the first part of the witches’ prophecy: that Macbeth will become Thane of Cawdor. What had seemed like a strange and possibly unreliable prediction suddenly proves true, which makes the rest of the prophecy—that Macbeth will become king—feel possible. The news not only honors Macbeth, but it also sparks his imagination and pushes him further toward thoughts of seizing the crown.

Ross’s announcement thus marks the point where prophecy begins to turn into action, tightening the link between Macbeth’s ambition and the fate he believes is unfolding.
