Definition of Motif
Water serves as a notable motif throughout Memoirs of a Geisha. In particular, Chiyo/Sayuri is associated with water, as many characters identify her as having a large amount of water in her personality, following from traditional belief in the five elements of wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. When Chiyo is sold to the Nitta okiya in Chapter 3, for example, Mother comments upon Chiyo's "watery" personality in order to persuade Granny to accept Chiyo as a new apprentice:
“With so much water in her personality,” Mother said, “probably she’ll be able to smell a fire before it has even begun. Won’t that be nice, Granny? You won’t have to worry any longer about our storehouse burning with all our kimono in it.”
