Kevin is Joanne Birch’s son and Tyler’s younger brother. He and his friend Nick Jonas attend school in the nearest town, Gibson, which is 300 kilometers south of the remote Anishinaabe reservation. The pair emerge part way through the story, having escaped from Gibson, which collapsed into violent chaos when the power went out. Kevin and Nick’s situation shows that modern civilization is fragile because of its over-dependence on technology.
