My Greatest Ambition

by Morris Lurie

Michael Lazarus Character Analysis

Michael Lazarus is Lurie’s classmate who sits next to him at school. After Lurie finishes his first comic, Michael gives him the idea to send it to a magazine. Michael’s comment motivates Lurie to publish the comic, but after the tour of the office, Lurie can’t bring himself to tell Michael about his disappointment. Michael serves to push Lurie towards success, but his presence also exacerbates Lurie’s disillusionment from the negative experience at the publishing house.

My mother didn’t say much to me but I heard her on the phone explaining to all her friends what a clever son she had. Clever? That’s one word I’ve never had any time for.

I didn’t tell a soul, not even Michael Lazarus, about that awful tour of the factory. I played it very coolly.
