Drew’s Grandmother Character Analysis

Drew lives with his grandmother in the Bronx; she never appears in person in the novel. Drew’s grandmother shares many similarities with Mom in that she desperately wants Drew to succeed, and she believes that receiving a quality education at a prestigious school like RAD is the best way for Drew to do that. Drew seldom tells his grandmother about the racism or bullying he experiences at school, not wanting to concern her—or have her brush off his concerns.
