A young man Captain Kidd and Johanna meet outside Durand. He’s part of a marauding cowboy game making mischief in the absence of any real government after the Civil War. He and his brothers make the Captain bribe them to enter the town, but a repentant John Calley later attends the Captain’s reading and befriends him. Several years later, when visiting the captain to talk about his cattle farming work, he meets the teenage Johanna, falls in love, and marries her.
