The novel begins, briefly, in Manila, at Tiago's dinner party, before going to San Diego, where nearly all of the remainder of the novel is set. San Diego is a fictional town in Laguna, a province near Manila, and Rizal's birthplace. San Diego is entirely controlled by the priests of the Catholic Church; Spanish authorities hold only weak authority.
