Explanation and Analysis—The Insects:
Throughout the novella, the narrator uses the motif of insects to describe himself and others. All humans are insects, he argues, even himself. He refers to Zverkov as a "little insect," and he refers to himself as a fly (despite his superiority complex) throughout the novella:
I was a fly in the eyes of society, a disgusting, obscene fly—smarter than the rest, more cultured, even nobler—all that goes without saying, but a fly, nonetheless, who incessantly steps aside, insulted and injured by everyone.
