Notes from Underground begins with an author's note from Dostoevsky, which acts as a soliloquy. He explains that The Underground Man is fictional, as are the events described in the novella, but men like him not only do but must exist in his society (1860s Russia):
Both the author of these notes and the Notes themselves are fictitious, of course [....]. In the excerpt entitled “Underground” this person introduces himself and his views and, as it were, wants to explain the reasons why he appeared and why he had to appear in our midst.
