Of Human Bondage: Chapter 19 Summary & Analysis

Summary
Analysis
Philip gets jealous that Rose is so friendly to everyone he knows, not just Philip. Although they still get along, Philip begins to get the sense that Rose only spends time with him out of old habit. Philip is one of the few boys in school who catches scarlet fever and has to be isolated. After a period of isolation, the school sends him back to the vicarage for his health.
In addition to the homosexual subtext, the fracturing relationship between Philip and Rose also shows how in this society, the expectations of masculinity change as the boys grow up and are expected to be more emotionally guarded. Close friendships are more acceptable among young children, but as Philip and Rose grow up, they become more independent and less emotional.

Quotes
When Philip returns to school, he’s forgotten any disagreements he had with Rose and just wants to be friends. Rose, however, has been moved to a new class after another boy died of scarlet fever, and he doesn’t seem interested in talking to Philip when Philip finds him. Later, Philip asks Rose why he’s being so aloof. Rose just gets defensive and leaves.
Rose seems to feel ashamed of his past closeness with Philip. This shows how at this traditional, old-fashioned school there are consequences not just for being an outsider but even for having anything to do with outsiders.

Eventually, Rose, who doesn’t like to have enemies, tries to apologize to Philip for being aloof.  Philip isn’t interested in forgiving him. Later, Sharp tells Philip that he overheard Rose talking about how Philip is a “damned cripple.”
