Lawson
Lawson is an art student Philip meets in Paris. Lawson is briefly in a relationship with Miss Chalice. He is one of the few people from Paris whom Philip keeps in touch with, seeing him occasionally in London. Although Lawson never achieves great fame, he sticks with painting.
Griffiths
Griffiths is one of Philip’s friends in medical school. He amuses Philip with his stories of romantic encounters. After Philip introduces Griffiths to Mildred, however, Griffiths and Mildred form a relationship. Philip becomes bitter and jealous of Griffiths, breaking off their friendship.
Macalister
Macalister is a stockbroker friend of Hayward’s who promises to make Philip lots of money. Although Macalister follows through with this at first, he ultimately gets Philip involved in a disastrous trade that sends Philip into poverty.
Dr. South
Dr. South is an eccentric old doctor who works at a seaside fishing town in the south of England. Although he has a reputation for being difficult to work with, he gets along well with Philip. As a result, Dr. South offers Philip a partnership, which Philip ultimately accepts.
Foinet
Foinet is a master at an art school in Paris. He judges his students harshly, in particular Miss Price. Foinet ultimately advises Philip that he’ll never be more than a mediocre artist, criticism that ultimately leads Philip to abandon his artistic endeavors.
Leonard Upjohn
Leonard Upjohn is a publisher who takes an interest in the poetry of Cronshaw. Ultimately, Upjohn only uses Cronshaw’s poetry and death to advance Upjohn’s own reputation as a critic.
Miguel Ajuria
Miguel is a young Spanish man who sits as an art model during Philip’s studies in Paris. Although Philip loses track of him, his portrait of Miguel remains his best piece of artwork, and he keeps it with him until Mildred destroys it.
Mrs. Otter
Mrs. Otter is a woman studying art in Paris whom Philip meets during his time there. She has separated from her husband and helps introduce Philip to his new art school when he arrives.
Josiah Graves
Josiah Graves is a bank manager and church assistant in Blackstable. Although Louisa likes him, he constantly annoys William with his self-important ways.
Dunsford
Dunsford is a younger student Philip meets in medical school, though he and Philip and Dunsford are never that close. It’s through Dunsford that Philip meets Mildred, whom Philip obsessively pursues after Dunsford loses interest in her.
Henry Carey
Henry is the father of Philip, husband of Helen, and brother of William. He dies before the events of the novel take place. Henry was a doctor, and although Philip doesn’t remember him, he follows in his father’s footsteps by becoming a doctor himself.
Clutton
Clutton is an art student whom Philip meets in Paris. He’s adept at talking about art but never shows anyone else his work, and he eventually drifts away from the other students.
Miss Chalice
Miss Chalice is an art student who becomes the lover of fellow student Lawson, who paints her. She also invites Philip to paint her, and the finished painting remains one of Philips better artworks.
Mary Ann
Mary Ann is the daughter of a fisherman who works as a housekeeper for William and Louisa. Young Philip gets close to her, perhaps in part because she’s around the same age as his mother Helen, who has recently passed away.
Miss Watkin
Miss Watkin is Philip’s godmother who briefly watches him after the death of Helen.
Dr. Tyrell
Dr. Tyrell is a popular doctor whom Philip works under during medical school. Observing Dr. Tyrrell helps Philip to see how disadvantaged poor patients are compared to wealthier patients who can afford expensive treatments.
Weeks
Weeks is an American student studying under Professor Erlin. He dislikes Hayward and tries to convince Philip Hayward impressive, but Philip won’t understand Weeks’s point until much later.
Professor Erlin
Professor Erlin is the husband of Frau Professor and the man whom Philip stays with in Heidelberg.
Emma
Emma is a maid for Miss Watkin. Philip grows very attached to her following the death of his mother.
Mr. Herbert Carter
Mr. Carter is the head of the office in London where Philip works for a year as an articled clerk. He thinks Philip is bad at the job, and Philip agrees.
Mr. Goodworthy
Mr. Goodworthy is a managing clerk at the office of Mr. Carter in London, He oversees Philip’s work as an articled clerk.
Tom Perkins
Tom Perkins is the headmaster at King’s School at Tercanbury, the boarding school Philip attends after completing his studies at the nearby preparatory school
Frau Professor
Frau Professor is the wife of Professor Erlin, whom Philip stays with in Heidelberg.
Jacobs
Jacobs is a surgeon whom Philip works under. He offers to operate on Philip’s club foot, and Philip eventually takes him up on the offer.
Mr. Kingsford
Mr. Kingsford is a man in his 40s who gets engaged to Norah after Philip rejects her.
Flanagan
Flanagan is an art student Philip meets in Paris who is known for his kindness.
Herr Sung
