Mr. D’Ulney is a math teacher who teaches at Eastham Middle School, where Jack Hurd and Joseph Brook go to school. After Mr. D’Ulney notices that Joseph is good at math, he gives Joseph extra math problems, tutors him in trigonometry, and nominates him for Math Olympiad. After Joseph is tragically killed, he is among the few people who attend the funeral.

Mrs. Halloway, the language arts teacher at Joseph and Jack’s middle school, was initially wary of Joseph because she had heard that he attacked a teacher while in a juvenile facility. Yet after she sees him reading a novel while bored on “Office Duty,” she approaches him in the hallway, admits that their relationship “began poorly,” and asks to “try again.” Mrs. Halloway is different from vice principal Mr. Canton, who remains prejudiced against Joseph due to his background and troubled past throughout the novel.
