Where does Othello take place?

Read our modern English translation.

The play takes place in two main locations: Venice, Italy and Cyprus. The play begins in Venice, where Othello and Desdemona's marriage causes conflict and where the Duke summons Othello to respond to a military threat. Othello is then sent to Cyprus to defend the island against a Turkish attack, and most of the play's tragic events unfold there.

The movement from Venice to Cyprus is thematically significant. Venice represents an ordered political society, while Cyprus becomes a more isolated setting where Iago's manipulation, Othello's jealousy, and the play's violence intensify.
