Captain Shek Character Analysis

The antagonist of the novel, Captain Shek is a high-ranking official in the Chinese military. He patrols Everest, making sure everyone has the correct identification documents and paperwork and listening in on radio transmissions, and he’s known for pulling people’s climbing permits with little or no provocation. Despite Josh and Zopa’s attempts to keep it a secret, Captain Shek learns that both Peak and Sun-jo would like to try for Everest’s summit—and he seems to know that Sun-jo is Tibetan and is traveling with forged papers. He thus leads soldiers on a hunt for Sun-jo, pursuing the boys nearly all the way to the top of the mountain. Shek’s main goals are lording his power over others and making his points, even if doing so hurts other people or puts them in danger; for instance, he insists on riding in the rescue helicopter, thereby taking a spot that could’ve gone to a sick or injured climber.

Chapter 19 Quotes

In a strange way the conversation helped to center me. It reminded me that climbing, even though there might be other people in your party, is a solo sport. Your legs, your arms, your muscles, your endurance, your will are yours alone. A partner can encourage you, maybe even stop you from falling, but they can’t get you to the top. That’s entirely up to you.
