Peak

Yogi Character Analysis

Yogi is Yash’s brother. Both Yogi and Yash are Sherpas whom Zopa brings to Everest, ostensibly to look for work. However, Zopa has secretly hired the brothers to take Sun-jo to the summit, and they eventually end up taking Peak to the summit, too. The brothers are generous, kind, and extremely skilled mountaineers (they’ve summited Everest three times). However, this doesn’t mean they don’t make mistakes: they fail to identify a broken ax and allow Sun-jo to use it, a mistake that almost kills Sun-jo. Yogi accompanies Peak back down the north side of Everest and travels with him back to Kathmandu.

Chapter 19 Quotes

In a strange way the conversation helped to center me. It reminded me that climbing, even though there might be other people in your party, is a solo sport. Your legs, your arms, your muscles, your endurance, your will are yours alone. A partner can encourage you, maybe even stop you from falling, but they can’t get you to the top. That’s entirely up to you.

The boulder and prisoners were gone. In their place was a Buddhist monk with a shaved head and an orange robe. He was talking to the driver with his back to us.

As we walked up, he turned around and smiled. It was Zopa!
