A 15-year-old black girl who lives across the river in Vancouver, Washington. Jade doesn’t know Natasha, but it still hits her hard when she learns that when police raided a house party, they beat Natasha, putting Natasha in intensive care with fractured ribs and a broken jaw. What happened to Natasha traumatizes Jade and all of her black friends and family members, as Natasha looks like she could easily have been a resident of their neighborhood. Eventually, Jade figures out how to channel her fear, grief, and desire to help others by organizing a benefit art show and poetry reading, with the proceeds going to Natasha’s family.
