Key Examples in Piranesi
Piranesi and the Other act as foils for each other, particularly in their opposite approaches to knowledge and relationship. The Other wants to discover "The Great and Secret Knowledge," his term for the powerful truth he believes the House holds. However, his desire for knowledge is motivated purely by personal gain. He views the House's inhabitants as resources to be exploited rather than as beings who are equal to him. This couldn't be more different from Piranesi, who treats both living and nonliving beings with reverence. Ironically, Piranesi gains deeper understanding through fostering relationships with the House's birds, statues, and skeletons than the Other does through his relentless pursuit of information.
