Summary
Analysis
Three days after the Taumoeba outbreak, Ryland systematically inspects every containment system onboard to identify the leak. He isolates the breeder farms and mini-farms, devises multiple tests using Astrophage slides, and sets up a makeshift alarm to detect future contamination. At first, all tests are negative, but after sleeping in the lab to stay close to the alarm, he wakes to find that all 10 breeder farms have clear slides—proof the Taumoeba escaped. Yet the mini-farms are clean. Ryland realizes the issue isn’t a crack in the xenonite, but something stranger: Taumoeba-82.5 may be capable of infiltrating xenonite itself. He compares the microbes to intelligent agents navigating a dense jungle. In contrast, inert nitrogen atoms simply bounce off barriers.
This moment transforms scientific discovery into existential horror. Ryland’s methodical inspections read as routine lab work at first, but they become a kind of creeping dread. He plays detective, treating his own ship like a crime scene, and when he sleeps in the lab to stay close to the alarm, readers see the toll of acute isolation and vigilance. The discovery that Taumoeba can pass through xenonite is a betrayal of everything Ryland thought he could rely on. Before he thought xenonite was invulnerable, but now it has become a liability.

Ryland tests the theory, which confirms his worst fear: his genetically modified Taumoeba have evolved to penetrate xenonite. This wasn’t part of the plan; it’s an unintended byproduct of breeding them for nitrogen resistance. The discovery is infuriating but manageable. Ryland resolves to house the Taumoeba in metal instead. But then a terrifying realization hits him: Rocky uses the same strain in xenonite farms aboard the Blip-A, and his entire ship, including the fuel tanks, is made of xenonite. Ryland collapses in panic, overwhelmed by the fear that Rocky’s ship—and Rocky himself—may already be doomed.
