In a flashback, Ryland continues his research on Astrophage, frustrated by its ability to travel from the sun to Venus with seemingly no navigation system. Scientists around the world are rapidly publishing unverified findings, leading to chaos in the scientific community. However, key discoveries emerge: Astrophage reacts inconsistently to magnetic fields, confuses nearby ants. Most significantly, it contains DNA and mitochondria, making it biologically similar to life on Earth. Despite its conventional cellular makeup, Astrophage possesses an unknown energy-storage system far beyond ATP. Determined to understand its movements, Ryland builds a lightproof chamber to isolate possible navigation cues. He discovers that Astrophage remains motionless in darkness but moves when exposed to light. However, it ignores ordinary white light, leading him to suspect it responds to specific wavelengths.

Experimenting further, Ryland hypothesizes that Astrophage navigates using Venus’s unique spectral signature. He simulates Venus’s carbon dioxide emissions by building a light source that emits CO₂’s distinct infrared wavelengths. When he activates the device, his Astrophage instantly vanish, moving at extreme speeds toward the simulated target. Reviewing the footage, he confirms they accelerated toward the light source as if it were Venus. This discovery suggests that Astrophage instinctively follows CO₂’s spectral signature, allowing it to locate Venus in deep space. However, when he examines the impact site, he finds something unexpected—a fourth Astrophage. One of them has reproduced.

Realizing he has accidentally triggered Astrophage’s reproductive process, Ryland refines his experiments and discovers its full life cycle. The microorganisms collect energy from the sun, store it, and travel toward Venus using infrared emissions as propulsion. Upon reaching Venus’s upper atmosphere, they absorb CO₂ and reproduce before returning to the sun to restart the cycle. Further testing reveals that Astrophage cells divide only after absorbing enough CO₂, and once they reproduce, the parent cell stops seeking Venus and instead seeks the brightest available light source: the sun. This explains why Astrophage follows predictable migration paths, which scientists call Petrova lines.

Shortly after documenting his findings, Ryland is abruptly extracted from his lab. Military personnel rush him through a rapid series of transports, moving him from California to a high-security facility in Hawaii, then onto an aircraft carrier in the middle of the ocean. Confused and frustrated, he soon finds himself at an international council led by Stratt. There, top scientists and government officials reveal that Astrophage is not only affecting the sun but has spread to multiple nearby stars, dimming them in an expanding wave of infection. However, one anomaly, Tau Ceti, stands out. Tau Ceti is a star near the center of the infected cluster, which remains untouched. The group believes it may hold the key to stopping Astrophage.

To investigate Tau Ceti, the international task force proposes an unprecedented solution: sending a spacecraft to study it firsthand. Ryland dismisses the idea as impossible, but Dimitri Komorov, a Russian scientist, explains that Astrophage stores energy by directly converting it into mass and can later convert mass back into energy to propel itself. This makes it not only the perfect energy source but also an unparalleled propulsion system, capable of enabling interstellar travel.

With this breakthrough, Stratt tasks Ryland with designing and overseeing a large-scale Astrophage breeding program to fuel the mission. When Ryland protests the extreme secrecy and military oversight, Stratt explains the reason for their ocean-based research facility: if a significant quantity of Astrophage is accidentally activated, the explosion would exceed the power of the most devastating nuclear bomb ever detonated. With no way out, Ryland realizes that his role in Project Hail Mary has only just begun.
