Determined to understand its movements, Ryland builds a lightproof chamber to isolate possible navigation cues. He discovers that Astrophage remains motionless in darkness but moves when exposed to light. However, it ignores ordinary white light, leading him to suspect it responds to specific wavelengths.
Ryland’s frustration at Astrophage’s lack of a visible navigation system shows how deeply he values cause-and-effect reasoning. The global chaos within the scientific community contrasts with his methodical approach, isolating him once again as a figure of clarity in the face of panic. Military personnel rush him through a rapid series of transports, moving him from California to a high-security facility in Hawaii, then onto an aircraft carrier in the middle of the ocean. Confused and frustrated, he soon finds himself at an international council led by Stratt. There, top scientists and government officials reveal that Astrophage is not only affecting the sun but has spread to multiple nearby stars, dimming them in an expanding wave of infection. However, one anomaly, Tau Ceti, stands out. Tau Ceti is a star near the center of the infected cluster, which remains untouched. The group believes it may hold the key to stopping Astrophage.

With this breakthrough, Stratt tasks Ryland with designing and overseeing a large-scale Astrophage breeding program to fuel the mission. When Ryland protests the extreme secrecy and military oversight, Stratt explains the reason for their ocean-based research facility: if a significant quantity of Astrophage is accidentally activated, the explosion would exceed the power of the most devastating nuclear bomb ever detonated. With no way out, Ryland realizes that his role in Project Hail Mary has only just begun.
