In Project Hail Mary, scientist Ryland Grace’s journey aboard the Hail Mary begins in isolation as he struggles to survive as the sole remaining crew member of a mission gone terribly wrong. As the story unfolds, however, friendship becomes the force that drives his quest to survive and gives his mission meaning. His relationship with Rocky, an alien he encounters during his mission, starts as a cautious exchange of gestures and mathematical patterns, but it quickly deepens into something personal. Unlike the crew Ryland lost, Rocky is alive, present, and just as stranded as Ryland himself. Their friendship is built not only on necessity but also on genuine companionship, and it deepens as they teach each other their languages, joke about their differences, and share meals. Rocky even insists on watching over Ryland while he sleeps, which Rocky’s species considers a show of trust. Their growing understanding transcends language and biology, making their bond more than just cooperation.

As they work to modify Taumoeba (a living organism that preys on the sun-dimming organism Astrophage) to save their planets, their friendship becomes inseparable from their shared purpose. Ryland is fascinated by Rocky’s species and treats their differences with curiosity rather than fear. He marvels at Rocky’s ability to construct intricate xenonite structures and embraces their contrasting approaches to problem-solving. When Rocky offers Ryland the excess Astrophage fuel he needs to return home, it’s not a gesture of repayment: it’s a mutually understood act of generosity. This moment shifts Ryland’s perspective on his mission, and he realizes he is not just working to save Earth: he is working to ensure Rocky’s survival, as well. When disaster strikes, it puts their friendship to the test . Rocky nearly dies saving Ryland, exposing himself to an oxygen-rich environment his body cannot withstand. Later, Ryland repays that sacrifice, turning his ship around to find Rocky when his vessel fails. In the end, their bond is not defined by their mission, but by their mutual understanding never to abandon each other. For Ryland, friendship is what transforms survival from a struggle into something worth living for, even in the loneliest reaches of space.

Chapter 7 Quotes

Ilyukhina would have loved this moment. She would have been absolutely bouncing around the cabin with excitement. Yáo would have been stoic and steady, but he would have cracked a smile when he thought we weren’t looking.

Explanation and Analysis:
This quote is part of the scene where Ryland is about to make contact with the Eridians for the first time. This is an important historic moment and Ryland knows it. The sheer fact of alien life—and Ryland’s proximity to it—breaks through the loneliness and routine that have defined Ryland’s time in space up to this point. For the first time, he feels part of something extraordinary. However, as quickly as the excitement hits, it turns personal. Ryland doesn’t celebrate alone—his mind fills with the presence of Ilyukhina and Yáo, his deceased crewmates. He imagines their expressions, their energy, the Dolorem et quae. Exercitationem non aut. Chapter 12 Quotes

“I sleep better if you observe.”
“Why?”
He waves a few arms, trying to find a way to phrase it. “Eridians do that.”
Eridians watch one another sleep. It’s a thing. I should be more culturally sensitive, but he threw shade when I talked to myself. “Eridians are unusual.”
“Observe. I sleep better.”
I don’t want to watch a dog-sized spider not move for several hours.
“Have some other Eridian observe you.”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“I am only Eridian here.”

Explanation and Analysis:
In this conversation, Rocky asks Ryland to watch him while he sleeps, an act that is standard in Eridian culture. There’s something quietly heartbreaking in Rocky’s request. He doesn’t explain it with logic or argue for its importance—he just states it as fact: “Eridians do that.” Sleep, for him, isn’t a private act. It’s something done in the presence of others, a baseline of connection that Rocky no longer has. In response, Ryland jokes, dodges, and deflects. He doesn’t want to sit and stare at a motionless alien for hours. But then Rocky reveals something that Ryland does not know: Dolorem et quae. Exercitationem non aut. Eveniet dolor non. Chapter 13 Quotes

“What the heck is wrong with you?” I said.
“I don’t like little dictators in their little kingdoms,” she said. “Drives me crazy.”
“You can bend a little once in a while.”
“I’m out of patience and the world is out of time.”
I held up a finger. “No, no, no! You can’t just use ‘I’m saving the world’ as an excuse every time you’re a jerk.”

Related Characters: Ryland Grace (speaker), Eva Stratt (speaker), Dr. Robert Redell
Page Number and Citation: 215
Explanation and Analysis:
This exchange occurs when Ryland Grace and Eva Stratt visit Auckland Prison to recruit Dr. Robert Redell, a disgraced engineer, for his expertise on Astrophage. Stratt, accustomed to wielding near-absolute authority, clashes with prison officials over standard security procedures, leading to a moment of friction between her and Ryland. Stratt embodies a utilitarian worldview. Here, Stratt implies that the urgent need to address humanity’s existential threat justifies her abrasive behavior and authoritative tendencies. Her declaration—“I’m out of patience and the world is out of time”—succinctly expresses her mentality: personal niceties and patience become irrelevant when humanity’s survival is at stake. Chapter 16 Quotes

“[…] It is name of my mate.”
I widen my eyes. That little devil! He never told me he had a mate! […]
“You have a mate?”
“Unknown,” Rocky says. “Mate possibly has new mate. I gone a long time.”
“Sad,” I say.
“Yes, sad. But necessary. Must save Erid.”

Related Characters: Ryland Grace (speaker), Rocky (speaker)
Page Number and Citation: 273
Explanation and Analysis:
While discussing what to name a newly discovered planet, Rocky tells Ryland that he wants to name it after his mate—someone he has never mentioned before. The moment lands quietly but carries emotional weight. Rocky speaks plainly, without drama or sentimentality, yet Ryland detects a sense of loss just beneath Rocky’s words. Rocky does not know if his mate has moved on, only that he has been gone too long. Rather than dwell on what he cannot change, though, Rocky returns the focus to his mission with a simple sentiment: it was necessary. This quote thus draws a sharp contrast Dolorem et quae. Chapter 19 Quotes

“Rocky! What have you done!”

The crazy bastard must have used the large airlock in the dormitory! He came into my partition to save me. And he’ll die because of it!

He shivers and folds his legs under himself.

“Save…Earth…Save…Erid…” he quavers. Then he slumps down.

Related Characters: Rocky (speaker), Ryland Grace (speaker)
Related Symbols: Hail Mary
Page Number and Citation: 325
Explanation and Analysis:
The quote captures the emotional climax of a life-threatening disaster aboard the Hail Mary, in which Ryland is crushed beneath his control chair in high-gravity conditions and begins to suffocate. Rocky, a heat-sensitive alien from a high-pressure, ammonia-based environment, breaches the boundary between their separated habitats to rescue Ryland. This moment does not hinge on problem-solving or survival tactics—it turns entirely on choice. Without hesitation, Rocky chooses to enter an environment that will hurt and maybe even kill him. He sees no guarantee he will survive, nor any certainty that his actions will even work. However, he does it anyway. Dolorem et quae. Exercitationem non aut. Eveniet dolor non. Incidunt dolores sunt. Chapter 20 Quotes

He could have let me die. He should have, really. He could handle the centripetal force, no problem. He could have taken his time, whipped up an invention, and used it to get back control of the ship. Yeah, I know, he’s a good guy and he saved my life, but this isn’t about us. He has a planet to save.

Related Characters: Ryland Grace (speaker), Rocky
Related Symbols: Hail Mary
Page Number and Citation: 329
Explanation and Analysis:
In this passage, Ryland lies pinned beneath the wreckage of his chair in the Hail Mary’s control room after a series of catastrophic malfunctions throw the ship into uncontrolled spin and thrust. In this moment of crisis, Rocky forces his way into the human environment—despite the lethal conditions—to free Ryland from the collapsing ship. Afterward, Ryland reflects on the irrationality of Rocky’s choice. Rocky could have waited. He could have endured the increased centripetal force, taken his time, and engineered a safe solution without compromising his own survival. Instead, he risked everything. Ryland acknowledges Rocky’s decency, but he also insists Dolorem et quae. Exercitationem non aut. Eveniet dolor non. Incidunt dolores sunt. Ad dolor at. Quia aperiam eligendi. Ut veniam voluptatem. Chapter 25 Quotes

“I’m going to miss you.” I take another swig of vodka. “You’re my friend. Heck, you’re my best friend. And pretty soon we’re going to say goodbye forever.”

Related Characters: Ryland Grace (speaker), Rocky , Eva Stratt
Page Number and Citation: 425
Explanation and Analysis:
This moment functions as the emotional culmination of Ryland and Rocky’s relationship and marks a significant thematic shift within Project Hail Mary. What initially began as a hard science-fiction narrative rooted in survival and problem-solving here becomes a meditation on connection, sacrifice, and chosen duty. The quote also signifies the full transformation of Ryland’s character. Throughout the novel, he has struggled with guilt, fear, and a persistent belief in his own cowardice. His decision to drink and speak plainly reflects not weakness, but Ryland’s courage to confront emotional truth. Importantly, this moment frames his forthcoming solitude not as a tragic Dolorem et quae. Exercitationem non aut. Eveniet dolor non. Incidunt dolores sunt. Ad dolor at. Quia aperiam eligendi. Chapter 29 Quotes

So that’s what I’m left with. Option 1: Go home a hero and save all of humanity. Option 2: Go to Erid, save an alien species, and starve to death shortly after. I sob into my hands. All I see when I close my eyes is Rocky’s dumb carapace and his little arms always fidgeting with something.

Related Characters: Ryland Grace (speaker), Rocky
Page Number and Citation: 455
Explanation and Analysis:
This moment marks the emotional and ethical climax of Ryland’s narrative arc, forcing a definitive choice between utilitarian duty and personal loyalty. The dilemma is stark: return to Earth a celebrated savior, or sacrifice himself to rescue Rocky and ensure the survival of an alien civilization. Ryland’s visceral breakdown—his sobbing, his physical collapse—signals a rupture in the moral logic that has guided the mission. His decision is no longer driven by global stakes but by the emotional bond with Rocky, whose memory now overwhelms him. This shift redefines Ryland’s character. Introduced as a reluctant, even passive participant, he now asserts Dolorem et quae. Exercitationem non aut. Eveniet dolor non. Incidunt dolores sunt. Ad dolor at. Quia aperiam eligendi. Chapter 30 Quotes

“Rocky…that news about Sol…it…it makes my whole life have meaning. You know? I still can’t…I can’t…” I start sobbing again.

“Yeah, I know. That’s why I wanted to be the one to tell you.”

Explanation and Analysis:
As Ryland receives confirmation that Earth has been saved, his emotional reaction overwhelms him. After years of isolation and uncertainty, the knowledge that his mission succeeded—that humanity survived—brings him to tears. His fragmented sentence, interrupted by sobs, communicates the depth of relief and meaning he finds in that moment. For a character who once saw himself as an expendable last resort, this is a moment of redefinition: he has not only fulfilled his mission but justified his own existence. Meanwhile, Rocky’s reply is understated but intimate. By choosing to be the one to deliver the news, he affirms their bond Dolorem et quae. Exercitationem non aut. Eveniet dolor non.
