Rainbow’s End

by Jane Harrison
Mr. Coody is the rent collector at Rumbalara. He imposes strict and invasive rules on his tenants, which includes threatening to evict Dolly and her family due to Dolly’s pregnancy. His intrusion into the women’s lives reflects that although Rumbalara is an Aboriginal housing district, it is not a safe haven or a stable place of community because it is run by White men.

She raises an egg as he turns.

Two…Oh hell, three.
