Explanation and Analysis—Priam's Childhood:

In one of the most significant passages of Chapter 2, Priam reveals the moment from his childhood that created a rift in his identity. He tells his wife, Hecuba, of how he was nearly sold into slavery as a child before being “restored” to nobility. When Priam recalls this moment to Hecuba, the details of his account lead to a flashback of the scene:

"You know my story," he says softly. "You must have heard it a hundred times as a child in your father's palace [...] Imagine, then, what it was like to be that child. To actually stand as I did at the centre of it, of what was not a story, not yet, but a real happening, […]."
