Ransom takes place in the legendary city of Troy, the same setting as Homer’s epic poem The Iliad, on which the novel is based.
Troy might have existed as a historical city in the country now known as Turkey, but its history represented in ancient Greek literature—such as the tradition of its repeated destruction and restoration—is likely fictionalized. Ransom occurs during the Bronze Age of civilization, in the time of the legendary battles between the Trojans and Mycenaeans known as the Trojan War. The Trojan War, also probably at least partially fictitious, is given a date of the 12th or 13th century B.C.E.
