Rascal

by Sterling North

Father Character Analysis

Sterling’s father is a real-estate speculator and, as a hobby, an unsuccessful novelist. A somewhat distant figure, he’s very hands-off in his parenting and essentially trusts Sterling to do whatever he likes. With Sterling’s mother dead and the other siblings having left home, this means near-total leeway to indulge in boyhood shenanigans, but remarkably, the arrangement works out well for both of them. Sterling’s father is an educated man with a deep knowledge of ecology, which he passes on to Sterling during their camping and fishing trips.

We walked on in silence approaching the forty acres of virgin forest which Kumlien had protected from the ax. It is gone now, but it was there when I was a boy, a sanctuary and a memorial, haunted by the spirit of the gentle Swede who played his flute for the whippoorwills.
