Remarkably Bright Creatures

Simon Brinks Character Analysis

Simon Brinks is a successful real estate developer in the Sowell Bay area and the man Cameron initially believes is his father. After finding an old photo of Simon and his mother, Daphne, along with a Sowell Bay High class ring, Cameron travels to Washington, intending to confront Simon about the child support he thinks was never paid. Simon, however, proves difficult to reach, and it takes months before Cameron finally lands a meeting. When they do meet, it’s at Mudminnow, a modern-day speakeasy that Simon built in Daphne’s honor, as the pair had always dreamed of becoming rich and having their own establishment. Simon reveals that he and Daphne were best friends when they were younger but never romantically involved, a dynamic Cameron relates to through his own friendship with Elizabeth. Simon describes Daphne as intelligent and often misunderstood, and he explains that the class ring Cameron found isn’t his—it’s engraved with the initials E.E.L.S., while Simon’s are S.O.B.
