Tova Sullivan Character Analysis

Tova is a 70-year-old widow living in Sowell Bay, Washington. She spends her evenings working as a custodian at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, a job she started following the death of her husband, Will, two years ago. She values the job for the quiet sense of order and control it brings to her already predictable life. Three decades earlier, Tova’s only child, Erik, mysteriously disappeared while sailing, a loss she has never fully accepted or understood. Tova’s friendships with other members of the community—the Knit-Wits, her boss Terry, her close friend (and eventual love interest) Ethan, and her unlikely friend Marcellus the giant Pacific octopus—provide her with companionship, but she spends a lot of time in solitude. Her bond with Marcellus proves especially crucial to her journey toward healing, as the octopus ultimately helps her piece together the truth about Erik’s death. Tova’s story becomes deeply entwined with Cameron’s as they discover that Cameron is Erik’s son and Tova’s grandson. By the novel’s end, Tova has found a kind of peace she had long believed was beyond reach.

Chapter 1 Quotes

How shall you refer to me, you ask? Well, that is up to you. Perhaps you will default to calling me that guy, like the rest of them. I hope not, but I will not hold it against you. You are only human, after all.

Related Characters: Marcellus (speaker), Tova Sullivan
Page Number and Citation: 2
Explanation and Analysis:
The giant Pacific octopus Marcellus’s remarks, which open the novel, immediately establish his distinct voice: self-aware, intelligent, and humorous. Using the second person, he speaks directly to the reader, inviting them into his world and thus forging a sense of intimacy. He reveals that, just like humans, he also has hopes and legitimate feelings. By anticipating the reader’s dismissal and then preemptively forgiving it, he not only sets the tone for his narration but also critiques typical human behavior, specifically the tendency to underestimate what people don’t fully understand. Ultimately, this line reveals a tension that will run through his Dolorem et quae. Exercitationem non aut. Eveniet dolor non. Incidunt dolores sunt. Ad dolor at. Quia aperiam eligendi. Chapter 4 Quotes

These women have always worn motherhood big and loud on their chests, but Tova keeps hers inside, sunk deep in her guts like an old bullet. Private.

Related Characters: Tova Sullivan (speaker), Janice Kim, Barb Vanderhoof, Mary Ann Minetti, Erik Sullivan
Related Symbols: The Sea
Page Number and Citation: 18
Explanation and Analysis:
When Tova meets the Knit-Wits for their regular lunch, she can’t help but compare her own circumstances to theirs. Unlike the other women in the group, Tova’s identity as a mother is defined by absence rather than presence, as her own son, Erik, died at sea when he was 18. By making the comparison between motherhood and a deeply-lodged bullet, Tova conveys the permanent pain of losing a child: the initial shock feels like a gunshot, and afterward, the bullet remains, buried but heavy and constant. While others “perform” their motherhood proudly, Tova quietly draws hers inward, where it festers. Dolorem et quae. Exercitationem non aut. Eveniet dolor non. Incidunt dolores sunt. Ad dolor at. Related Characters: Tova Sullivan (speaker), Erik Sullivan
Related Symbols: The Sea
Page Number and Citation: 19
Explanation and Analysis:
As Tova reflects on Erik’s disappearance while sailing 30 years earlier, she recalls how nearly everyone in the Sowell Bay community accepted it as a suicide. But this has never seemed right to Tova. She knew her son, and she knew he was happy. Not one cell in her body believes he would have taken his own life, but her belief means little without proof to support it. A part of Tova resents her community for believing the police’s version of events, as Sowell Bay isn’t a big city and plenty of people knew Erik, too. They knew his character, Dolorem et quae. Chapter 9 Quotes

Watching Tova go into the night always prickles his nerves. According to his police scanner, there are always lunatics on the roads at night. Why must she do her shopping so late?

Related Characters: Ethan Mack (speaker), Tova Sullivan, Will Sullivan
Page Number and Citation: 44
Explanation and Analysis:
After Tova leaves the Shop-Way grocery, Ethan smokes his pipe outside of the store, thinking about her. She’s been doing her grocery shopping at night for two years now, and he’s been ironing his flannel shirts before each shift ever since. He wants to make a good impression on Tova because he cares about her—and he nurses a crush on her. Ethan’s younger sister was killed a long time ago by a drunk driver, and he fears a similar fate could befall Tova. Chapter 10 Quotes

Why can humans not use their millions of words to simply tell one another what they desire?

The sea, too, is very good at keeping secrets.

One in particular, from the bottom of the sea, I carry with me still.

Related Characters: Marcellus (speaker), Erik Sullivan, Tova Sullivan
Related Symbols: The Sea
Page Number and Citation: 47
Explanation and Analysis:
As Marcellus reflects on the tendency of humans to keep things from one another—for seemingly no reason—he cryptically recalls a secret of his own, “from the bottom of the sea.” In this quote, he identifies a core human problem he has observed after four years of living in the aquarium: despite having the language, people often fail to communicate honestly or fully. His question points to how much of the novel’s conflict stems from miscommunication and misunderstanding, but it also speaks to his own preference for honesty—if he had someone to share his secrets with, he likely would. Chapter 23 Quotes

Even after Erik was gone, Will would do the same thing every time there was a game on: sit on his same cushion while Erik’s sat empty. Loafing as usual, as if nothing had changed. It always irritated Tova.

Keeping busy was much healthier.

Related Characters: Tova Sullivan (speaker), Erik Sullivan, Will Sullivan
Page Number and Citation: 109
Explanation and Analysis:
Before Erik disappeared, he and Will would often “loaf” together on the couch, watching whatever sport happened to be in season at the time. It was one of the ways they bonded as father and son. But when Will continues the same habit after Erik’s death, Tova has a difficult time understanding why. She doesn’t see it, as Will likely does, as carrying on a sacred tradition, but rather as laziness or a form of avoidance. Ultimately, this quote speaks to the fundamental clash between Tova and Will’s grieving styles. For her, staying in constant motion—decades of cleaning, working, doing—is Dolorem et quae. Chapter 25 Quotes

Will they find her on the kitchen floor? Summon an ambulance to take her to the hospital? Who will fill out the admit forms, clipped to their clipboard? And that will merely be the beginning.

Unless.

That packet she picked up at Charter Village.

Perhaps it’s time to fill out the application.

Related Characters: Tova Sullivan (speaker), Janice Kim, Lars Lindgren, Mary Ann Minetti, Barb Vanderhoof
Page Number and Citation: 128
Explanation and Analysis:
As Tova reflects on the fact that all of the Knit-Wits aside from her—Barb, Janice, and Mary Ann—have children who will care for them in their old age, she can’t help but recognize that she is not in the same position. Her old, cherished home, the one her Swedish father helped build, isn’t the safest place for a single elderly woman to live, with its narrow stairs and bumpy driveway. Anything could happen, and there would be no one there to help her. Tova acknowledges that there is great risk in aging alone, and with the recent passing of her Dolorem et quae. Chapter 31 Quotes

The agent hikes her glasses up again. Why doesn’t she adjust them to fit? It’s an easy fix with a micro screwdriver.

Resisting the urge to run his finger along the “No Bull” frog’s rounded back, which is covered in a layer of dust, Cameron nods again.

Related Characters: Cameron Cassmore (speaker), Jessica Snell, Tova Sullivan, Simon Brinks
Page Number and Citation: 154
Explanation and Analysis:
While Cameron sits in Jessica Snell’s realty office to try and find information about Simon Brinks—a successful real estate developer, and the man Cameron believes is his father—he’s momentarily distracted by the fact that her glasses are too big for her head. He wonders why she wouldn’t simply fix them, as all she would need is a micro screwdriver. Moments later, he becomes distracted by the dusty frog figurine on her desk. At this still-relatively-early point in the story, Cameron has been depicted as inconsistent, avoidant, and unfocused, but this seemingly insignificant scene demonstrates that there’s far more to him Dolorem et quae. Chapter 32 Quotes

“Tova, love. That place! It’s . . . not you.”

“I beg your pardon?”

Ethan sniffs. “What I mean is, it’s not good enough for you.”

“Charter Village is one of the finest facilities in the state.”

“But Sowell Bay is your home.”

Related Characters: Ethan Mack (speaker), Tova Sullivan (speaker)
Page Number and Citation: 167
Explanation and Analysis:
When Tova tells Ethan she’s planning to move out of Sowell Bay, to the upscale Charter Village retirement community, he’s taken aback and has a hard time hiding his disappointment. Ethan has been secretly fond of Tova for a long time, and he doesn’t want her to leave, but he finds it hard to be forthright about his feelings. His awkward protest here isn’t really about whether Charter Village is “good enough” for Tova but purely the fear of losing her, of her choosing convenience or safety over the life she’s built and the relationships she’s made. His phrasing is Dolorem et quae. Exercitationem non aut. Eveniet dolor non. Incidunt dolores sunt. Ad dolor at. Quia aperiam eligendi. Ut veniam voluptatem. Aperiam consequuntur mollitia. Chapter 33 Quotes

“Conscience does make cowards of us all.” He feels himself start to redden. How does he always manage to drop this nerdy shit into conversation? He starts to explain, “It’s just some dumb Shakespeare quote. It’s from—”

Page Number and Citation: 177
Explanation and Analysis:
When Cameron learns that not only can Marcellus escape his tank, but that he does so each night, Tova asks him not to tell Terry. Although Cameron is aware that keeping such a secret from Terry could result in his firing if his boss were to find out, the thought of making Tova sad and stripping away this octopus’s relative amount of freedom ultimately means more to him than losing the job, and he agrees to remain quiet. Summing up how he feels about the situation, he casually recites the Hamlet quote, which implies that it’s often scary to do Dolorem et quae. Exercitationem non aut. Eveniet dolor non. Explanation and Analysis:
When Erik disappeared at sea 30 years ago, Tova and Will exhausted themselves going over their son’s life, searching for anything they may have missed that could have possibly led to his disappearance. Erik’s friends were questioned by the police, but no one said anything about Erik having a girlfriend at the time. Still, Will never entirely bought this, aware that teenage boys have private lives they sometimes even keep from their friends, in addition to their parents. If they do not figure it out soon, everyone involved will be left with a . . . hole.

As a general rule, I like holes. A hole at the top of my tank gives me freedom.

Explanation and Analysis:
Marcellus has deduced that Tova is Cameron’s grandmother, something none of the human characters realize yet. As Marcellus reflects on the fact that neither Tova nor Cameron knows they’re related, his sense of urgency grows. To him, their connection is obvious—a truth evident in their shared gestures, habits, and cheek dimples—but they remain unaware. With his death looming, Marcellus feels the weight of responsibility: if he doesn’t act, the truth will die along with him, and two people he’s come to care for will continue living with unanswered questions and wounds that never heal. He recalls a bad check for $6 that used to hang in the grocery store—before Ethan purchased it—signed by a Daphne Cassmore. As it dawns on him that Cameron’s last name is also Cassmore, he realizes that she’s Cameron’s mother—and she may have had something to do with Erik’s disappearance. When Janice unexpectedly invites Tova out to lunch on a Monday afternoon, Tova suspects her friend may have an ulterior motive. And, ultimately, she’s right: Janice invited her to finally demand honest answers. Lately, Tova has been slowly distancing herself from her friends. She kept her decision to sell her house and move to Charter Village a secret from the Knit-Wits for as long as she could, and by the time they finally learned what she was doing, it was too late to talk her out of it. Knowing that a young family from Texas has purchased her home, Tova imagines them growing old there, parents cared for by their children and grandchildren, supported by a network of care and continuity. It’s a future she was denied when Erik died at 18, before his own life had truly begun. “Good plan,” says Cameron. “I mean, that’s coming from a guy living in a camper.” He grins, and the heart-shaped dimple on his cheek indents, and for a moment he looks every part the impish grandson.

Explanation and Analysis:
After selling her house and then abruptly deciding not to move into Charter Village, Tova finds herself suddenly—and refreshingly—rootless. For the first time in her life, she isn’t tethered to obligation or routine. The decades she spent defining herself by what she owed—to her husband, to her job, to her grief—have given way to a new, unfamiliar sensation: the freedom not to know what comes next. That uncertainty, once one of her deepest fears, now feels like possibility. Her exchange with Cameron, lighthearted but intimate, marks a turning point for both of them. Explanation and Analysis:
In Marcellus’s final reflection, he frames the human world with the amused detachment of a creature who has observed it closely but never quite belonged to it. His tone is characteristically wry, recalling his earliest monologues, when he considered himself intellectually and morally superior to all of the humans around him. But here, at the end, he’s changed. Though he still sees people as overwhelmingly clumsy and helpless, he also acknowledges that, occasionally, they can surprise him. In an impactful (and lightly humorous) subversion of expectations, the title of the novel is not in reference to octopuses—in the end, it’s Dolorem et quae. Exercitationem non aut. Eveniet dolor non.
