Summary
Analysis
Having recovered from his migraine, Teddy goes looking for Chuck, whom he finds back in Ward A. Chuck tells Teddy that he went looking through Dr. Cawley’s desk when the doctor was busy dealing with Teddy. He found Dr. Cawley’s calendar in the desk, which had four days circled with the phrase “Patient sixty-seven” written next to it.
The calendar in Dr. Cawley’s desk is almost too perfect of a clue. It matches up exactly with Rachel’s note in a way that feels too good to be true. Regardless, it looks like there is a patient 67 after all. Or, at least, someone wants Teddy to think there is.

Night falls and Teddy has a hard time getting to sleep. He listens to the orderlies snore and talk in their sleep; they all sound peaceful and comfortable. However, outside the storm is still raging. Teddy thinks about his conversation with Dr. Cawley and whether or not he is suicidal. He considered suicide shortly after Dolores’s death but decided against it. He knows he needs to get over her death but has no idea how to do so. He wonders whether it is even possible.
Here, Teddy is more honest with himself than he has been up to this point in the novel. He grapples with his grief directly and wonders about how much of a danger he is to himself. Although he has tried moving forward after Dolores’s death, he knows he needs to try to do more to confront his grief before he can move on and live a relatively healthy life.

Teddy also finds himself wishing he had not taken the pills Dr. Cawley gave him. He blames them for keeping him up so late. Teddy’s mind wanders to the first time he met Dolores. They danced together at a place called the Cocoanut Grove. After the dance, Teddy called Dolores a cab. Before she left, Dolores called Teddy by his full name, Edward, which made him laugh. He also asked for her last name (Chanal) and her address.

Because he cannot sleep, Teddy opens his notebook to try and decipher the code he wrote down earlier in the day based on the rock formations he and Chuck found. He quickly discerns that the number of rocks in each pile corresponds to a letter of the alphabet. One rock equals “A,” two equals “B,” and so on. Teddy writes down the letters for each pile and then rearranges them. Once rearranged, the letters spell out “Andrew Laeddis.” Teddy looks at the letters and promises himself he will kill Andrew.
