Mentor Character Analysis

Mentor is the teacher of Jonas and Gabe’s village at the end of the novel. He’s passionate about education and supporting his students. He grudgingly shares that years ago, he traded away his honor to Trademaster to become more handsome so he could court a woman—and he was so unpleasant after the trade that she rejected him. In the present, he has returned to his normal, honorable self.

The veer worked. But not in the way Gabe had planned. He found no math answers there. Instead he had an overwhelming feeling of a kind of passion: for knowledge, for learning of all sorts—and for the children who sat that day at the small desks, as Gabe did. He felt Mentor’s love for his students and his hopes for them and what they would learn from him.
