Analysis
Cricket and Mia schedule their kidney surgeries for the day after the 10th anniversary of Liz’s death. On the night before those surgeries, to commemorate Liz, they once more plunge into the frigid waters of the Atlantic Ocean. When they do, together, they see a vision of their mother.
After Cricket donates her kidney to Mia, they see a vision of their mother at the same time, reflecting the novel’s view that Mia, Cricket, and Liz remain united in the way that they choose to show up and make sacrifices for one another.
