Dad texts Jessie and asks if they can talk tonight. They haven’t spoken in eight days since their fight over the pancakes, but Jessie isn’t ready to let him feel better for making bad choices and ignoring her. She figures he can talk to Rachel and texts that she’s working late.
When Jessie says that Dad can talk to Rachel, it suggests she thinks that Dad already has a community and a family here to support him—and by extension, that he doesn’t need her. This reflects Jessie’s narrow, immature view on the world—Dad is human too, and moving is hard for everyone.
