Qasim Abdur-Rahman Character Analysis

Qasim Abdur-Rahman is a taxi-cab driver and longtime member of Omar’s temple community. He is also Brother Lateef’s right-hand man. While waiting for the purchasing committee meeting to begin, Qasim is the topic of conversation: on the previous night’s news program, it was revealed that he won the lottery, which is a big deal considering that gambling is a prohibited activity amongst Temple folk. The members of the purchasing committee have varying loyalties, and Brother Suleman’s wisecracks about Brother Qasim upset Brother Larry, who supports Qasim. An argument erupts between the two of them later on, and Suleman ends up punching Larry in the face.
