Curtis is a classmate of Bryon and Mark. Initially, Bryon dislikes Curtis because Bryon’s ex-girlfriend Angela broke up with him in order to pursue Curtis. Curtis ignores Angela, however—and one night at a party, Angela convinces a kid to beat up Curtis as revenge. Mark intervenes in the fight and is badly hurt. When Bryon subsequently recognizes that Curtis was oblivious to Angela’s advances, Bryon realizes that he isn’t so bad. At the end of the book, after Bryon stops going out with Cathy, Cathy and Curtis go out together. Curtis is also the protagonist of Hinton’s first novel, The Outsiders.
