The 5th Wave
by Rick Yancey
Cassie’s dad is an optimistic man who tries to convince Cassie that things will work out in the end. While he instills in Cassie a sense of compassion, he also ends up dying due to his trusting nature, as he gets executed by Vosch in a refugee camp. Still, Cassie’s dad also has a pragmatic side, and as much as he wants to believe the best in people, he also procures an M16 rifle for Cassie when he can tell that trouble is coming. Cassie’s dad’s death hangs over her character for much of the novel and is perhaps the biggest reason why she finds it difficult to trust other people.
