The Adventures of Augie March

by Saul Bellow

Leon Trotsky Character Analysis

Leon Trotsky is a real-life historical figure who was a prominent revolutionary and political theorist. A key figure in the 1905 Russian Revolution, he fell out of grace with the Soviet Party in the wake of Vladimir Lenin’s death and Josef Stalin’s rise to power. In the late 1920s, he was expelled first from the bureaucracy, then from the Party, and then from the Soviet Union itself. He lived as an international exile from 1929 until his death in 1940 at the hands of a Stalinist agent. In the novel, Augie encounters Trotsky when he happens to visit Acatla—with Hooker Frazer and Sylvester in his entourage—during Augie’s time there.
